Structural Intervention (2018) is a multidisciplinary installation that emerged from Planas’ lived experience training for and winning gold at the Golden Girls boxing championship in Sweden. Having thrown her first punch only six months prior, Planas was quickly consumed by the rigorous discipline of competitive boxing—training twice daily, shedding nine kilograms, and entering a state of intense physical and emotional isolation. This ascetic transformation became the foundation for a body of work that examines the intersection of strength, vulnerability, and the politics of the female body.
The work unfolds through a constellation of elements: poetry screen-printed onto hand wraps, video and photographic documentation of the fight, and a series of stark black-and-white photographs. These components are assembled on a modular scaffolding structure that references both the architecture of the boxing ring and the mechanics of display. Responsive to each exhibition space, the installation is fluid and reconfigurable, underscoring the tension between construction and collapse, spectacle and subjectivity.
Structural Intervention reflects on athletic endurance as both a personal rite and public performance. By channeling her own bodily transformation into art, Planas challenges conventional portrayals of women in sport—foregrounding emotion, damage, and repair in a world that often demands detachment.
